Microchip New 8-bit Microcontroller Integrates Core Independent Peripherals to Reduce Response Time for Critical System Events in CAN Networks

Microchip Technology Inc. announced the addition of eight 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) to the PIC18 family of products. These microcontrollers combine a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus with a large number of coreless peripherals (CIPs) to enhance system functionality and enable designers to more easily develop CAN-based CAN Applications.

A key benefit of using a K83 MCU in a CAN-based system is that CIP provides a deterministic response to real-time events, reducing design time and is easy to configure using the MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC) tool. This new family of products is ideal for CAN-enabled applications in medical, industrial and automotive markets such as electric operating tables, asset tracking, ultrasound machines, automatic conveyors and automotive accessories. When completing a task, system designers have a lot easier time configuring hardware-based peripherals than writing and verifying the entire software routine.

Steve Drehobl, vice president of Microchip's 8-bit MCUs product group, said: "The ability to configure the MCU with just a few keystrokes in the MCC will change the way you design CAN, and with the same tools used with other PIC microcontrollers, CIP for easy access to communications, smart analog, and low power. "

15 time-saving CIPs in the PIC18 K83 device include: Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) to support memory scans to ensure non-volatile memory integrity; direct memory access (DMA) to enable memory-to-peripheral (WWDT) for system reset triggering; 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC2) with computational capability to support automatic analog signal analysis for real-time system response ; Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG) to enable efficient synchronous switching of motor control. Development Support The new product is powered by the MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC), a freeware plug-in that provides a graphical interface to configure peripherals and features specifically for your application. The MCC is included in Microchip's downloadable MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and in the cloud-based MPLAB Xpress IDE. This series is also supported by the Curiosity High Pin Count (HPC) Development Board (Part # DM162136).
